Event: RICE AND SLAVERY: THE CONNECTION THAT MADE THE LOW COUNTRY
Although other crops were grown in the Low Country - Sea Island cotton, indigo - rice dominated the low country's landscape and was responsible for the area's rise to prominence. The prime movers in rice cultivation were enslaved Africans and African Americans who provided the knowledge, technology, and labor to turn this grain into a cash crop.
