Maps, Politics, and Graphic Design

The Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art at the College of Charleston is excited to produce "Maps, Politics, and Graphic Design," a lecture by Scott Reinhard in conjunction with our current exhibition "Larson Shindelman: Geolocation."

Scott Reinhard will join us to talk about his work producing maps for the graphics desk at the New York Times. In recent years, Reinhard has used maps and graphic design to convey important stories pertaining to the COVID-19 pandemic, American politics, climate change, and more. He will discuss his work making these graphics as well as his own ventures into cartography. As a graphic designer producing maps and visualizations for the "New York Times" Scott Reinhard will discuss how he uses design to tell stories. He will touch on how his career has unfolded, his experience creating maps, and advice he has for young graphic designers.

Brooklyn-based artist Scott Reinhard has worked at the highest level of print and digital graphic design for over a decade, having worked for the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, "The New York Times," and the seminal design studio 2x4. With his foray into mapping and land visualization, he brings a new eye and approach to how we imagine the landforms around us.

The Halsey Institute presents "Geolocation" by the artist duo of Nate Larson and Marni Shindelman. Using publicly-accessible geographic data from tweets, Larson Shindelman track down specific locations where Twitter users were when they posted on social media. Once there, the artists make a photograph from the location, connecting the tweet-stored on a remote server and readable around the globe-and the physical world. This body of work explores the connection between text and images, digital and analog, and private versus public.
