Go behind-the-scenes in the Museum's Historic Textiles collection with Curator of Historic Textiles, Teresa Teixeira, as she discusses black artisans in Charleston, both enslaved and free, and their work. In the Museum's storeroom, learn the story of a gentleman who constructed feather fans that eventually earned enough to purchase freedom for himself and his wife. Participants will also have the opportunity to take a closer look at jockey uniforms dating back to the early 1830s and a child's petticoat, both constructed by enslaved men and women, and a late-19th-century dress with the label of a prominent, local black designer. Register online for this exclusive experience, behind-the-scenes at The Charleston Museum. Light refreshments provided. Registration is required (ages 12 and up) and space is limited. Participants must be able to climb stairs.
