This exhibition features selected works from both the Gibbes permanent collection and private holdings by Charleston native Edward I.R. Jennings (1898-1929). An artist of the Charleston Renaissance era, Edward Jennings's imaginative style, characterized by his use of mythological creatures and fanciful landscapes that verge on surrealism, is often overshadowed by the more picturesque expressions of his Charleston contemporaries. However, during his ten year career he created a significant body of work ranging from theatrical set, costume and mask designs to watercolors and pastels highly influenced by the abstract art movements of the 1920s.
