Memorial Day program on Women who Served in World War II

Join us on Memorial Day, May 30th 2016 to honor the women who served during World War II. There will be two 45 minute programs offered at 12:00pm and 2:00pm in the Fort Moultrie Visitor Center Auditorium, located at 1214 Middle Street on Sullivan's Island, South Carolina.

With the efforts of Congressional Representative Edith Nourse Rogers and the signing of her proposed bill into law on May 15, 1942, women were able to enlist in the US Army for the first time, and the first servicewomen of the Women Army Corps (WAC) arrived at Fort Moultrie Military Reservation in 1943.

Interim Chief of Visitor Services, Tony Paladino says, "We are honored to share the stories of these women, many of whose families are still struggling for their rights to have a final resting place at Arlington Cemetery. This program brings light to the Women's Army Corps here on Sullivan's Island and throughout the global theatre during World War II."

Fort Moultrie is located at 1214 Middle Street, Sullivan's Island, South Carolina. The site is administered by the National Park Service as a unit of Fort Sumter National Monument. Fort Moultrie represents the entire history of static seacoast defense in the United States, from the American Revolution to the end of World War II. The site is open daily from 9:00-5:00 and includes a visitor center with museum exhibits and an orientation film. An entrance fee of $3 for adults and $1 for senior citizens is charged for the park.

This year, 2016, marks the Centennial of the National Park Service's establishment. To celebrate, the National Park Service is working on new ways to help connect visitors to parks and help them find their parks. Come find yours today!
