The Charleston Parks Conservancy and the City of Charleston will host a grand opening and ribbon cutting on Saturday, June 4, to celebrate the newly renovated Colonial Lake. The event is 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Colonial Lake. Charleston Mayor John Tecklenburg will be on hand for a ribbon cutting at 11 a.m.
Part of Piccolo Spoleto, the Colonial Lake celebration will include a variety of entertainment and music, activities for children and food trucks. Conservancy volunteers will provide a horticultural tour of the park's gardens, and visitors will be able to learn about Colonial Lake's history. Attendees also will have the opportunity to learn about the construction process and improvements to Colonial Lake, including a new water flow control structure to better manage the water that flows between the lake and the Ashley River.
Additional entertainment includes music by John Cusatis, artists capturing the beauty of Colonial Lake in a plein air painting demonstration, and the Charleston Model Yacht Club will race model sailboats on the lake. Children can enjoy a scavenger hunt around the park, sidewalk chalk and hopscotch. Ashley Avenue will be closed to vehicles and attendees can purchase food from Smoke BBQ, Short Grain, Sweet Lulu's Bakery On Wheels and Mac Daddy food trucks along with King of Pops.
