Charleston to Charleston Literary Festival

"For more than 268 years, the Charleston Library Society has strengthened our city’s intellectual and cultural environment with lively programs focused on literature, history, culture and music. The young founders of the Library Society in 1748 established strong ties with English booksellers and intellectuals because they sought to stay abreast of all current historical scientific, literary, and other information. They did not aim to create the significant historical collection that now exists. Rather, their acquisitions reflect the history of intellectual curiosity in America,” said Anne Cleveland, executive director of the Charleston Library Society. “The Charleston to Charleston literary festival will continue this significant tradition by attracting the internationally acclaimed writers to share their works.”

The Library Society is grateful to partner with the Charleston Trust, the charitable organization set up to preserve Charleston, Sussex. Charleston, a farmhouse in the pastoral setting of the rolling South Downs of Sussex near the English Channel, was the home of Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant and became the country retreat of the famed “Bloomsbury Group” of writers, artists and intellectuals such as Virginia and Leonard Woolf, John Maynard Keynes, Lytton Strachey, E.M. Forster and from time to time, T.S. Eliot and Vita Sackville-West, among other friends. “Charleston”, which is now open to the public, hosts one of the most prestigious literary and ideas festivals in the UK. “For the last 28 years, the Charleston Festival has featured innumerable well known international authors, creators and thinkers,” said Alistair Burtenshaw, director of the Charleston Trust. “We are thrilled to partner with the Charleston Library Society to create this new special cultural attraction in the U.S.”
