It is said Charleston is the last bastion of seersucker, a sartorial holdout where bon viveurs pair the puckered fabric with straw hats, foppish bowties, and white buckskin shoes. And while our tradition-steeped Southern finery may seem strange to outsiders, the simple fact is Charlestonians revel in self-expression. Kilts, tutus, and boat shoes all co-exists harmoniously—even at the same dinner party!
King Street, with its mix of national brands and local multi-generational merchant families, like Croghan’s Jewel Box, which is managed today by the 4th generation of its founding family. Artisans making dresses, hats, and accessories abound. We love to peek inside the workshops and ateliers that dot the peninsula. And for a marathon shopping experience, we can always head to one of the area’s urban shopping meccas like Tanger Outlets or Towne Centre.
Lucky for us, we still have a week before the high-energy runway shows, roving photographers, up-and-coming designers and a see-and-be-seen crowd converge for five nights of apparel and attitude under the tents in Marion Square during Charleston Fashion Week.
