Cinema-Inspired Getaway Channel the Romance

Charleston's beauty and charm has long captured the hearts of both visitors and filmmakers. We've rounded up our favorite Holy City Hollywood landmarks for a star-worthy getaway. First up? Charleston's most romantic cinema sites.

Date at the Theater

"The Notebook's" Allie Hamilton and Noah Calhoun's first date takes place at The American Theater. Now retired, the circa 1940's art deco building lives out its second life as a popular event venue. Be sure to check its marquee sign, which often reads the names of newlyweds who celebrated their nuptials at the adjacent William Aiken House.

Campus Stroll

The College of Charleston lies in the heart of downtown Charleston. Stroll through this beautiful, live oak-lined campus towards the canopied Cistern Yard, which you'll recognize from Allie's college scenes in "The Notebook." Randolph Hall, the building at the center of the nearby courtyard is where Savannah penned letters in "Dear John," and where the General Assembly convened in "The Patriot."

Beach Boardwalk Visit

Take a quick trip to one of Charleston's barrier islands: Isle of Palms. Stroll the beach towards the fishing pier to the site of John Tyree and Savannah Curtis' first meeting in the flick "Dear John." Time your trip for sundown and watch the sun sink under the ocean horizon as your first day in Charleston comes to a close.

Cinema-Inspired Getaway Embark on Adventure

Find yourself in a bustling street reminiscent of a bygone time. Tee off on a gorgeous oceanside course. Spend the day bouncing around town, visiting some of our favorite film site locales. Charleston is an outdoor playground waiting to be explored.

ENJOY A SCOOP OF ICE CREAM

In "The Notebook," Allie and Noah take a summertime stroll down Mount Pleasant's historic Pitt Street. Pop into the Pitt Street Pharmacy, where you'll find a soda fountain and diner counter, to grab a scoop of ice cream just as the romantic duo did.

Stroll Down Broad Street

Lace up your walking shoes and take a walk down iconic Broad Street. You may recognize the street from the scene in "The Notebook" where Noah dismounts a moving bus to chase after Allie after catching a glimpse of her on the busy street.

Hit the Fairways

Many scenes from the film "The Legend of Bagger Vance" starring Will Smith take place on the gorgeous Ocean Course at Kiawah. Designed to catch both the easterly and westerly winds, this course will test your swing while taking your breath away with its beauty.

Cinema-Inspired Getaway Transport Back in Time

Charlestons historic landmarks, storied streets and old world charm feels like stepping back in time. It's no surprise that Hollywood has turned back the clock to film these blockbusters.

Explore Boone Hall

Boone Hall, one of America's oldest living and working plantations, serves as the dreamy exterior of Allie Hamilton's summer home in "The Notebook." For the site of the movie's many canoe scenes, meander down to the creek. As you leave, take a look at the beautiful wrought iron gate which Noah hit with his truck during the film's break-up scene.

Meander through the Gardens

With over 65 acres of land to explore, this National Historic Landmark is home to the oldest landscaped gardens in America - and the scene of the Britisher's Ball in "The Patriot." As you weave through centuries-old groves of crepe myrtles, magnolias and camellia, you may find yourself feeling transported to another place and time.

Step into The Notebook

Though just a short drive from downtown Charleston, Cypress Gardens seems a world away. It was here that a number of motion pictures were filmed, including The Notebook and The Patriot. Spend a peaceful day enjoying a scenic boat ride through the 80 acre blackwater swamp surrounded by tall bald cypress and tupelo trees while keeping your eyes peeled for alligators, birds, turtles and more swamp life.
