The Gibbes Museum of Art does not tell Charleston’s story from a singular point-of-view, but rather through a series of artistic lenses and diverse perspectives. The museum’s permanent collection includes works by African American artists such as Mary Jackson, Kara Walker, Leo Twiggs, David Driskell, Charles Edward Williams and Sam Doyle. In addition, the Gibbes has collaborated with artists and other museums to introduce major thought-provoking installations such as the 2019 Spoleto-tied Black Refractions: Highlights from The Studio Museum in Harlem and Prop Master: Installation by Juan Logan and Susan Harbage Page. Since the close of the Prop Master exhibition in 2009, the Gibbes has added 28 new acquisitions by African American artists. The Gibbes strives to reflect Charleston’s diverse population and engaging the community with visiting artists of all ages, national identities and backgrounds.
