Walking Tour of Post-Civil War Drayton Hall

Curator Cameron Moon will lead a tour of the evolution of the Drayton Hall landscape close to Ashely River Road on Friday, September 27, 2019 from 1 PM to 3 PM. She will take the group to areas never before interpreted at Drayton Hall to examine how the land was utilized from the colonial period to the 20th century.

Cameron's area of research at Drayton Hall has been the post-Civil War and 20th century history of the site, focusing on the phosphate mining endeavor, its effects on the landscape, and most importantly, the African American community that lived and worked on the property from 1865 to 1960.

This walking tour of Drayton Hall is your opportunity to visit and discuss in depth the events and implications of the end of the Civil War on the lives of the enslaved and the Drayton Hall owners at the time.

This talk will be followed by a second talk, for which registration will be separate, that will be held on Friday, October 25, 2019 and will investigate the post-Civil War features of Drayton Hall close to the Ashley River.
