National Park Service's 100th Anniversary Celebration

Fort Sumter is offering a wide array of free activities Aug. 27 to celebrate the National Park Service’s 100th anniversary.

Historic weapons demonstrations and talks will be offered at the Charleston Harbor landmark, as well as at Fort Moultrie on Sullivan’s Island and the Liberty Square Visitor Education Center on Concord Street in downtown Charleston. Children may participate in a Centennial Junior Ranger program and earn a centennial badge.

The activities are free, but there’s a fee for the boat ride to Fort Sumter.

President Woodrow Wilson signed into law the National Park System Organic Act on Aug. 25, 1916.

Fort Sumter is the site of the opening bombardment of the Civil War on April 12-13, 1861. Boats ferry visitors from Liberty Square at 304 Concord near the S.C. Aquarium to the fort and to Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum in Mount Pleasant.
