Louie’s Kids is the nation’s oldest organization devoted to helping families lose weight, get off the couch and start taking care of their lives. Pediatric and adolescent obesity plagues one in four American kids today. This year is the 20th anniversary of Louie’s Kids. Since April 2001 Louie’s Kids has provided well over 1000 children and families a new opportunity to jump start their health.

The community support for Big Chef/Little Chef has grown over the years. Since its inception, this wellness-based fundraiser has tripled in size and become one of the most enjoyable evenings of the year.

The COVID-19 Pandemic has been so hard on us all. But we want to get kids back outside and award some summer camp scholarships. So, for the opportunity to be chosen for Little Chef Big Chef, and earn a spot at Summer Camp this summer we will ask kids to submit an essay of 300 words or less answering the question, “What has the pandemic taught me about food and my health?”

The essay contest is open to adolescent teens 12-17. A panel of judges from the publishing world, former Big Chefs and food pros here in Charleston will help us select the winners. Once the winners have been chosen, each child will be paired with a Big Chef to learn about healthy cooking and beyond. Louie’s Kids creates a one-on-one experience between each chef and child. In 2019, our host chef was so inspired by Will Fincher’s weight loss that he joined the Louie’s Kids Fit.Family program. He and his wife have lost a significant amount of weight – their lives have changed; their children’s lives have changed and that’s what Louie’s Kids is all about …fighting obesity one family at a time. We are so pleased to have Chip Plasitowe of Halls Signature Events as our host chef.

This dinner will revolve around five children and their families, matched with five amazing chefs. Throughout this five-course dinner, each child/chef team will present their dish to the guests. The purpose of this exercise is to educate the diners about the decision for each course, why it’s a healthy alternative and the simplicity of making healthy choices in their own home. Each child/chef team will be awarded a Louie’s Kids cutting board to remind them of their accomplishments and efforts while sharing their knowledge of a healthy lifestyle.
