Juneteenth at Magnolia Plantation and Gardens

In partnership with the Slave Dwelling Project, Magnolia will host a Juneteenth program in lieu of our From Slavery to Freedom Tour!

This is included with Garden Admission and will include education & interpretation seminars, demonstrations, and a gospel performance from Oh Happy Day, plus BBQ from This Little Piggy and James Brown’s Famous Boiled Peanuts from 10am-3pm.

The 1863 Emancipation Proclamation meant nothing to enslaved people where Union forces did not occupy. This freedom did not occur in Galveston, Texas until June 19, 1965, three months after the Civil War officially ended in April.

For decades, Texans and residents of other states have been commemorating Juneteenth or June 19th as the day of freedom for all formerly enslaved people. The day was proclaimed a national holiday in June 2021.
