John Duckworth AWAKE

Always looking for unique spaces to display his art, John Duckworth is currently displaying selected works from his signature exhibit titled AWAKE at an old warehouse turned gallery in Asheville, NC. His second pop-up show, featuring brand new and never before seen works, opened on October 1 at Fritz Porter Design Collective at the Cigar Factory. His pop-up show will be on display through the end of November, with an artist reception Thursday, November 10, 2017 from 6-8pm. The reception is open to the public and Bar Mash will be on site mixing special cocktails.

“These six pieces, currently on display at Fritz Porter, represent the latest release in my Landscape Abstracts series, a body of work that I have had the great fortune to produce since 2003. I never grow tired of it, as one of my greatest joys is to stand in the river, the marsh, or the pluff mud in my hip-waders with my camera creating artwork. This is my meditation and communion with nature, and thankfully the calming and meditative essence of my experience is translated through the art - the work tends to lower your blood pressure,” says Duckworth.

The photographs are not digitally manipulated in post-production. Duckworth uses his camera like a paintbrush, removing non-essential information by blending and blurring the details in order to get at the essence of the experience. The closer you stand, the more abstract they become, and farther away they become more photographic; they often appear to subtly move when given time to sit quietly before them.

Each piece is meticulously produced in Duckworth’s studio on Johns Island. Using a proprietary proofing process to achieve the most accurate colors possible, he prints straight to canvas utilizing a state-of-the-art digital darkroom with a wide-format printer and archival inks. Once printed, canvases are given a protective UV coating, stretched over custom-designed stretcher bars, and framed with handmade, locally built wood floater frames in either African Wenge or painted black. These pieces are produced in limited editions of five per image, no matter the size, and are available in 26x40" or 40x60".

Fritz Porter is located at 107 East Bay Street, suite #106. Fritz Porter is a haven for inspired, beautiful and interesting objects that embody a unique spirit and redefine interior experiences. The space provides a unique shopping experience, offering antiques, home accessories, custom furniture, original artwork, lighting and a small, curated selection of fabrics and wall coverings.
