Dream Sequence - Joshua Flint Solo Exhibition
Event Details
Robert Lange Studios upcoming exhibit, “Dream Sequence” features the narrative works of magical-realist painter Joshua Flint. This new series of paintings capture overlapping ideas and fleeting memories painted in a story telling fashion. All are welcome at the December 2 opening from 5-8pm where the artist will be on hand to answer questions and sign copies of his new book, “Joshua Flint: Selected Works 2012-2022.”
Flint says of choosing the show title “Dream Sequence,” “The phrase carries a strong correlation to the visual language of my painting. It is also a literary technique used in film and storytelling, which has a big influence on my work; as much of my work is derived more from literature than anywhere else.”
Along with building this new body of paintings, Flint has also been working on a much anticipated new book. The book will explore a decade of paintings and in it he said, “I speak to motivations, origins, and other insights into my painting practice, along with their accompanying themes, in my new book that will be available at the show.” The book titled “Joshua Flint: Selected Works 2012 -2022” is a celebration of the artists process and journey.
The progression of work in the book has led Flint to this new series of paintings and aided in elemental discoveries in paint. One standout element that Flint has recently started to incorporate in his paintings is pattern. He says, “I've been incorporating pattern into the paintings as a structural element helping define a place, which can hint at interior walls, and they also function as graphic elements to break the "reality" of the subject matter.”
While many of the smaller works have elements of pattern, one of the larger works in the show, titled “Paper Ships” is a 60-by-48 oil on canvas and depicts, among other things, two figures in a glowing pool of water. Flint says, “This painting has broadened the world of these liminal places that I am drawn to. Many works I create describe a more intimate place like a room or an interior. With this painting there's an expanse of space, of the wilderness, with giant mountains off in the distance shrouded in clouds. The relationship between the interior and the vast exterior stretch of space creates a very dynamic interaction.”
Gallery owner Robert Lange said of Flints upcoming show, “There is something in the atmosphere of these latest paintings that takes my breath away; they are richer, deeper, and more mysterious than ever.”
Flint has been featured in American Art Collector, Southwest Art, and Poets and Artists. He received his BFA from the Academy of Art in San Francisco in 2002.
The exhibition will hang from December 2 – December 23, and a festive reception, featuring music, wine, and his new book, is open to the public on December 2, 5:00-8:00 PM, in conjunction with the First Friday Art Walk.
