Holy City Arts & Lyric Opera (HALO) presents Cuban-American soprano Elaine Alvarez and Christopher Cano on piano for an intimate evening celebrating the classical musical traditions of Cuba & Spain, with special guests the Gino Castillo Quartet.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS:

ELAINE ALVAREZ
Cuban-American soprano Elaine Alvarez burst onto the international opera scene in 2007, with her soulful portrayal of Mimi in Puccini’s La Bohème at the Lyric Opera of Chicago. Characterized by a distinct ‘buffed bronze soprano’ (Opera News), Alvarez has blossomed into a true spinto d’agilitá, delivering performances rich with ‘melting, voluminous sound’ (Frankfurt Allgemeine), ‘spectacular agility’ (Opera World Magazine), and ‘a profoundly genuine sentimentality’ (Miami Herald).

CHRISTOPHER CANO
A seasoned recitalist, orchestra soloist and collaborative pianist, Christopher Cano has performed throughout the US, Mexico, Israel, Europe and the Far East. Mr. Cano has appeared at Carnegie Hall, The Kennedy Center and Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum and on WQXR, NPR, and KUAT radio. In recital, Mr. Cano has partnered with some of today’s most promising vocal talent including Matthew Polenzani, Susan Graham and Jennifer Johnson Cano. As a collaborative artist, he has played in the Master Classes of Licia Albanese, Fedora Barbieri, Anna Moffo, Lauren Flannigan, Martin Katz, Craig Rutenberg, and Suzanne Mentzer. Mr. Cano has also played for the master classes of Marilyn Horne in New York City at Carnegie Hall.

THE GINO CASTILLO QUARTET
Gino Castillo is an Afro-Cuban jazz percussionist, singer and leader of the local band Gino Castillo Quartet and Soulfunkubanized, A tribute to Africans- American music that influenced a change in modern cuban music in the 1970s. Gino Castillo has played professionally in Ecuador, Cuba, New York City, and for the last few years in Charleston, SC. Sponsored by Pearl Drums, he has appeared in concert and recorded with a long list of international artists, many of which can be heard on his latest CD, Ya Llegue. In Charleston, he performs with his own group, The Gino Castillo Quartet. He also appears with the Charleston Jazz Orchestra and a number of other local groups.
