Concurrent Solo Exhibits – Jessie Renew and CJ Howard

Event Details
Retrofits is a collection of interactive, mixed media compositions by artist, designer, and illustrator, Jessie Renew. She finds discarded objects in thrift stores, at estate sales, and in trash piles and repurposes them into three-dimensional collages. Some pieces include interactive features, switches, and changeable parts. Retrofits celebrates the visual and narrative interest of everyday stuff. By changing their context, these objects are freed of their former lives as practical or decorative. Holy Humxns by CJ Howard is a series of life-size oil paintings that celebrate matriarchs and artists. These powerful and complex human beings are raising children, fighting for justice, working to pay the bills, and pursuing their own creativity — every day. They deserve to be celebrated and commemorated for their work, their love, their passion, and their existence. Infused with tenderness and prayer, CJ Howard's oil paintings are lovingly handcrafted and become family heirlooms. She loves to paint children and parents, and she has worked with a wide array of models to create life-size portrait paintings, as well as intimately small keepsakes. The artists will host a free public reception at the gallery from 5-7pm on Friday, July 8.
