Chamber Music Charleston Presents Bach, Beethoven, and Mozart

Chamber Music Charleston’s acclaimed Ovation Concert Series continues on Sunday, March 9, 2025, at 3 PM at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church (405 King Street).

The program features e a selection of masterpieces of the chamber music repertoire, including Mozart’s Flute Quartet in D Major, Beethoven’s String Quartet in D Major, Op. 18 No. 3, and Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 4. Internationally acclaimed flutist Demarre McGill and violinist Francisco Fullana join musicians from Chamber Music Charleston for this extraordinary afternoon of music.
The concert opens with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Flute Quartet No. 1 in D Major, K. 285. Composed in 1777, this delightful quartet showcases Mozart’s lyrical writing for the flute, complemented by the elegant textures of the string trio. The three movements are characterized by their grace, charm, and melodic beauty, creating an intimate atmosphere that highlights the flute's expressive capabilities.

Following Mozart, the program continues with Ludwig van Beethoven’s String Quartet in D Major, Op. 18 No. 3. Written between 1798 and 1800, this quartet is part of Beethoven’s first set of string quartets and exhibits his early mastery of the form. Known for its dynamic contrasts, inventive harmonies, and spirited rhythms, this work reflects Beethoven’s unique voice and innovative approach to chamber music.

The concert concludes with Johann Sebastian Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 4 in G Major, BWV 1049. This vibrant and intricate concerto is celebrated for its lively interplay between the soloists and the ensemble. Featuring virtuosic parts for the violin and flute, alongside a rich string accompaniment, this work is a testament to Bach’s genius and remains a cornerstone of the Baroque repertoire, providing a rousing finish to the afternoon’s performances.
