The Town of Mount Pleasant Historical Commission is kicking off its 2025 Black History Month Celebration this weekend with a special short films screening at the Regal Palmetto Grande Theaters at Towne Centre.
Every Saturday in February, the Commission is hosting free events to honor and explore the rich history and contributions of African Americans in our community. This Saturday, February 1, at 6 PM, attendees will have the opportunity to view a selection of short films by award-winning filmmaker Jason Gourdine. Mr. Gourdine will be available for questions following the showing.
February 3rd: Edmund Jenkins Presentation and Panel Discussion with Local Law Enforcement Officers
2 pm at the Wando Library, 1400 Carolina Park Blvd
Lt. Don Calabrese presented on the life of Edmund Jenkins, a veteran who became the one of the first town marshals. Following the presentation, five Mount Pleasant police officers discussed topics including the legacy of Edmund Jenkins, the benefits and challenges of being in law enforcement, and the meaning of Black History Month.
February 10th: The Plantation Singers
6 pm at Christ Church, 2304 N HWY 17
Opening remarks by Colonel Matt Chandler followed by The Plantations Singers, with director Lynnette White, performed an A Capella performance of traditional Gullah Spirituals. The intermission included a brief presentation on sweetgrass basket making.
February 17th: Songs and Storytelling by Ann Caldwell
6 pm at Town Hall, 100 Ann Edwards Ln
Ann Caldwell performed traditional spiritual songs and storytelling. Ms. Caldwell is the director of the Magnolia Singers.
February 24th: Historic Phillips Community Panel Discussion
2 pm at Wando Library, 1400 Carolina Park Blvd
Richard Habersham, Phillips Community Association President, with a five-person panel, discussed the history of the Phillips Community, the new national historic register status, and the process they took to be listed as a local historic district and then nationally registered.
