An Evening with David McCullough

The Charleston Library Society has announced it will host two-time Pulitzer Prize winner David McCullough at a special event in February. McCullough will be accompanied by pianist Ed Wise for an American history-themed performance punctuated by the music of George Gershwin and Scott Joplin at the Dock Street Theatre on February 21.

"I'm excited to return to Charleston" said Mr. McCullough, "Rosalee and I have fallen in love with Charleston, and we are thrilled to return to the Charleston Library Society, which hosted us two years ago. The Library Society is a vibrant cultural institution whose members embrace history, literature and fun. We are looking forward to returning!"

McCullough and Wise will reprise a special "show" that began as a way to raise funds for the public high school library on Martha's Vineyard. In the 1980s the pair adapted Morning on Horseback, about Theodore Roosevelt, into a stage presentation with music. It was so warmly received and gave them so much personal enjoyment, that they have presented it a few select times: at the White House under President George H.W. Bush, the 100th anniversary celebration of the opening of the Brooklyn Bridge, and the Truman Library in Independence, Missouri.

"We are thrilled to have David McCullough return to help us - in a way you have never seen him before" said Anne Cleveland, executive director of the Charleston Library Society. "People recognize his mellifluous voice from his narration of Ken Burn's The Civil War, and they adore his ability to convey American history as a master story teller. It will be a unique and memorable experience to have him share his stories in a whole new format. His generous presentation will continue the Library Society's tradition of bringing stimulating and educational performances to Charleston."
