Let Us Introduce Ourselves

Let Us Introduce Ourselves

Welcome to Charlestonly, a weekly dispatch written by native Charlestonians who have an abiding passion for the city and are quick to share an Insider’s point of view.

We love our cocoon of gentility, with its perfume of tea olive and honeysuckle.

We love our local flavors, the tantalizing sweetness of blue crab, collards seasoned by tradition, and, of course, the ethereal kiss from the sea that floats atop every shucked oyster shell.

We love our piazzas with their haint blue bonnets.

We love winter’s parade of riotous color when countless confection-colored pink-and-white azaleas bloom pop open seemingly overnight.

We love the symphony of church bells that echoes across the peninsula and the rustle of palmetto fronds in a balmy afternoon breeze.

We love Gullah, a language that bobs and weaves with dramatic intonation, staccato cadence, and linguistic peculiarities seemingly impossible to parse upon first sound.

We love the fragrant ocean mist that clings our salt marshes and the earthy scent of a sweetgrass basket.

We love the cultural identity forged into our homes by blacksmiths and earthquake bolt salesmen of years ago.

Perhaps most of all, we love our pace of life, our people, and the prevailing latitudinarian sensibility of the community.

And we love to share it all with you.

Charleston Spring Style Guide

Tradition-steeped Southern finery may seem strange to outsiders, but the simple fact is Charlestonians revel in self-expression.
