What started out as a hand-crafted groomsman gift has boomed into the highly sought after, feathered treasures known as Brackish. When co-founder Ben Ross was preparing for his Big Day, he knew that he wanted to gift his groomsmen with something special and reflective of the South. Ben went to work and hand-fashioned feathered bow ties to bestow to each member of the wedding party. Fast forward a few years and many requests for more ties, Ben and his former groomsman Jeff Plotner began building the Brackish brand. The two collaborated to create a bow tie that honored artisan techniques and was synonymous with the distinctive style and spirit of the South. Following the introduction of the one-of-a-kind bow ties, the Brackish house has grown to include lapel pins, pocket squares, cufflinks, studs, cummerbunds and shoes. Their products all start with sustainably sourced feathers that support local farms and later become unmistakable works of art.
We spent time in their Charleston headquarters and were treated to an insider’s look at the intricate process of creating the wearable must-haves. The team of artisans at Brackish hand select each feather and strive to respectfully repurpose the beauty of nature. Each tie requires between 4 – 5 hours to craft with every wrap hand-stitched and sewn in-house to perfectly compliment the selected feathers.
