Sullivan's Island
Casual, unhurried Sullivanís Island is one of the most relaxing and family-friendly beaches on South Carolinaís coast. Year-round, visitors enjoy the islandís inviting beaches, charming seaside neighborhoods and laid-back dining venues.
While every town has a history, the history of easy-going Sullivanís Island is one that is significant not only to South Carolinians, but to all Americans and to the founding of our nation. During the Revolutionary War, on June 28, 1776, the battle of Sullivanís Island became the first Patriot victory over the British. During the battle, a substantial British fleet and army were decisively defeated, seriously wounding British pride.
Positioned at the mouth of Charlestonís Harbor, with Ft. Moultrie at its tip, Sullivanís Island has always served as the cityís first line of defense against its historical foes. In addition to the British, Sullivanís Island has protected and been used to defend the city against Union Forces, pirates and hurricanes.
The islandís literary history is noteworthy as well. Several distinguished authors have written of the islandís history, rustic beauty and relationship to neighboring Charleston. Edgar Allen Poeís The Gold Bug is one of the most well-known works, but artists and authors still delight in telling the islandís story today.
To be sure, Sullivanís Island is treasured by visitors and residents alike for its rich history, friendly atmosphere, and simple beauty.
