Sticky Fingers Torn Over Socon Basketball Tournament, Offers Free Ribs To Men's, Women's Winners
For Immediate Release, February 2006

CHARLESTON, SC – Feb. 28, 2006 – As Chattanooga natives, Sticky Fingers Rib House co-founders Jeff Goldstein, Chad Walldorf and Todd Eischeid are always excited to see their childhood favorite UTC Mocs play. But as Charleston residents for the past 14 years, the three have become big fans of the home-team College of Charleston Cougars and The Citadel Bulldogs. Their loyalties are always tested during the Southern Conference Basketball Tournaments, especially as Charleston plays host.

To help settle their torn feelings, the Sticky Fingers owners are again offering free ribs for a year to the winning coach of the men’s tournament and for the first time to the women’s winning coach.

As customers have been known to drive thousands of miles for Sticky Fingers’ ribs, the offer could help determine a game’s outcome. Last season, Sticky Fingers’ offer of free ribs for a year to the winning coach turned out to be incentive enough for the Mocs. On their home court, UTC took the SoCon title for first time since 1996-97, allowing rookie coach John Shulman to claim his ribs.

Adding to split loyalties, both Goldstein and Eischeid are married to College of Charleston (COC) alumnae. Mike Monen, operating partner of Sticky Fingers’ two Chattanooga restaurants, also grew up in Chattanooga as a Mocs fan, but he is a COC alum.

“As a company, we certainly have trouble deciding which team we want to win, but there’s no doubt we want the winning coaches to enjoy the spoils of victory,” said Goldstein, whose restaurants around the conference also include Greenville locations near Furman and Wofford.

UTC’s Mocs (16-12, 7-6) are the No. 2 seed in the North and COC (17-9, 9-5) edged out Wofford for the No. 2 seed in the South. No. 11 seed Citadel (9-20, 1-14) plays Furman Thursday. The top-seeded Lady Mocs are undefeated in conference play and 24-3 overall, while the Lady Cougars are 11-16. Tournament play begins March 2.

Last year wasn’t the first time the Sticky Fingers founders put food on the line. In 2003, when former UTC coach Jeff Lebo was being considered for another coaching job, Sticky Fingers offered him free ribs for a year if he stayed. Lebo stuck around for one more season – and more than a dozen slabs of ribs – before heading to Auburn.

As fans of the SoCon Tourney since Goldstein’s first trip to Ashville over 20 years ago, the trio has once again signed up Sticky Fingers as a Super Patron level sponsor.

Mt. Pleasant, S.C.-based Sticky Fingers is a casual rib house with 16 locations in the Southeast - 11 in the Carolinas, two in Chattanooga, two in Florida and Savannah, Ga. The success of Sticky Fingers restaurants has generated high-volume mail order, catering and wholesale sauce business.
