January 22, 2010 our speakers are Gene Philips and Debbie Odom from Savannah. Gene will speak on Hybridizing Camellias and Debbie will teach a hands-on class on Waxing Camellias. The programs will start at 2:00pm immediately following the daily camellia walk. January 29, 2010 our speaker is Robert E. Lee IV, the inventor of Encore Azalea®, the only azalea to bloom in spring, summer and fall, has more than 30 years’ experience in nursery management, breeding, propagation, and new plant development. He is presently active in several horticultural organizations and is past president of the Azalea Society of America. He has received several horticultural awards. Buddy continues to be active in the development of new plant selections. His current role is Director of Plant Innovations at PDSI (Plant Development Services Inc.) in Loxley, Ala. PDSI, specializing in bringing new innovative plants to market, is responsible for both Encore Azalea and the new Southern Living™ Plant Collection, www.SouthernLivingPlants.com. Mr. Lee will speak at 7:00pm followed by a wine and cheese reception. We will be raffling off a camellia japonica Robert E. Lee. The camellia was named for the southern leader by Magnolia on the Ashley in commemoration of his 100th birthday and was thought lost until 2 years ago when two plants were found growing at Magnolia. Tickets for the lecture and reception are $10.00 per person. February 7, 2010 Dee Smith, curator of the Davis Arboretum, Auburn University and members of her staff will speak on the arboretum and native azaleas. Program will begin at 1:00pm. Back |
