Vitruviana 2012: Charleston & The Development of Architecture in America

The beauty and character of Charleston architecture have long been celebrated, but its pioneering national role has not been fully appreciated. VITRUVIANA 2012 inaugurates a series of annual Charleston symposia (with related tours) on the development of American architecture and the prominent role which Charleston architects and their patrons have played in it.

The two-day inaugural event will feature:

DAY ONE - Friday, April 13th: "Charleston and the Development of American Architecture" Symposium
Begins 9:15am at Lance Hall, Circular Congregational Church, 150 Meeting Street, Charleston, SC

and

DAY TWO -- Saturday, April 14th: Parish Churches of the Charleston Lowcountry - a guided bus tour
Departs at 9:00 a.m. from Circular Congregational Church, 150 Meeting Street, Charleston, SC. Return time: approximately 4:00 pm

About the bus tour: the early rural churches and chapels surrounding Charleston are among the region’s most under-recognized treasures. VITRUVIANA 2012 has organized an unusual one-day bus tour to introduce and explain these out-of-the-way gems from the 1700s. The tour, guided by historic preservation professional Jonathan Poston will dispel any idea that precocious architecture was solely an urban phenomenon.

The tour will begin with Old St. Andrews Parish Church (1706; enlarged 1723) and continue with St. Thomas and St. Denis Church (1706), Pompion Hill Chapel (1763-1765), Strawberry Chapel (1725), and St. James Parish Church (1768).

VITRUVIANA 2012 IS PRESENTED BY:
