On Saturday, March 14, the Tangled Up in Blue: Indigo Dyeing program will be held from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Skeins of wool sheared from the Middleton Place sheep, as well as various types of cloth, will be dyed in vats of indigo by costumed interpreters in the Plantation Stableyards. Additionally some of the indigo-dyed wool will be available for purchase in the following weeks in the Middleton Place Garden Market and Nursery.
Indigo, a plant that produces a blue dye, was an important part of South Carolina’s 18th century economy. Grown commercially from 1747 to 1800, it was second only to rice in export value. By the end of the Revolutionary War indigo replaced rice as the main cash crop of the Carolina Low Country and was the main product of Wassamsaw plantation, one of the Middleton family’s earliest land acquisitions.
