Strings and Salsa

Come out to the Charleston Music Hall on FRIDAY, June 27th to experience a new collaboration between the Charleston salsa community and a strong lineup of Charleston musicians.

In 2013, Robbi Kenney had the idea to combine her two favorite pastimes: salsa dancing and playing violin. She partnered with Gino Castillo and gathered a group of violinists and cellists to work on Cuban rhythms and musical stylizing to fit in with a high energy jazz-rhythm section. Expect to hear traditional salsa dance tunes such as “Ran Can Can” and “Viva Catalina” in addition to the “Cubanized” Stevie Wonder and Prince repertoire that Gino has made popular in Charleston over the past year. Robbi is adding music by Kimbra, Pharell Williams, and a few other contemporary artists all “Cubanized” with heavy lush string arrangements.

If you love salsa dancing but do not go out to salsa clubs regularly, this show is a great opportunity to watch local dancers who bring the “Charleston” flavor with additional layers of hip hop and samba. A pre-show opening act will be presented by the Dancing on Air Crew, so arrive early and be prepared to party!

The doors open at 7pm and the show starts at 8pm.

Tickets are $20 for each individual, or $15 each for groups of 6 or more.
