The Heyward-Washington garden is of a formal design which became popular with the building of the Palace of Versailles in 1661. The formal garden was distinguished by its symmetry, discipline, and geometry. All plants in The Heyward-Washington garden were introduced to the Lowcountry no later than 1791; many were imported from Europe. Visitors will see camellia, tea olive, boxwood, althea, bearded iris, roses, herbs, and more. Today, the garden is maintained by the Garden Club of Charleston.
