Solo Exhibit from Artist Paul Yanko; "Close Tolerances: Braced Built Expanded"

The George Gallery, located at 50 Bogard St., is hosting a public reception for the opening of painter Paul Yanko’s show of recent works titled “Close Tolerances: Braced Built Expanded” which will be held from 5 to 8pm, Friday May 29. The exhibit of his latest paintings will be on view at the gallery through June 12.

The subject matter of this collection by Paul Yanko will be an expansion on his geometric language that defines the elements on his canvases. “The title of the exhibitions borrows partly from terminology used in engineering to refer to the physical distance or space (tolerance) between things, such as the space between a nut and bolt. In the context of my work, I am concerned with making fine adjustments to the placement, scale and registration of shapes that exist within loosely defined compartments, or cells. Initially, these compositions begin as strictly ordered, grid-based arrangements that develop into densely crowded configurations. The words "braced, built and expanded,” elaborate on this idea by referring obliquely to descriptions of modifications, or retrofits, made to architectural structures and cars.”-Yanko

The artist, who teaches in the Visual Arts Department at the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities in Greenville, South Carolina, received his M.F.A. in painting from Kent State University and B.F.A in illustration from the Cleveland Institute of Art. His work is included in private and public collections including the Cleveland Museum of Contemporary Art, McDonough Museum of Art, The Greenville County Museum of Art, The Akron Museum of Art, Southwestern Medical Center (Dallas) and the Contemporary Carolina Collection at MUSC. In 2002 he was the recipient of an Ohio Arts Council Individual Artist Grant.
