Record Smashing Tea Party

There is nothing more Southern than sweet tea – the table wine of the South. And the residents of Summerville, SC are setting out to shatter the Guinness Book of World Records for Largest Sweet Tea.

On June 10, National Tea Day, locals and guests alike will gather here in the Birthplace of Sweet Tea for a free, family-friendly celebration and Guinness Book adjudication.
This is a very local effort. The 10-foot tall jar (already named “Mason”) will be constructed of fiberglass by local Scout Boats. It will hold 1,400 gallons of brew made from 198 pounds of tea leaves from The Charleston Tea Plantation, 2,100 pounds of local sugar from Dixie Crystals, 2,800 pounds of ice -- and a lot of local support.

The Record Smashing Tea Party will take place outside of Town Hall (200 S. Main Street) from 5:00-8:00 p.m. Brewing of the tea will begin in the morning, and it will be ready for consumption by the early afternoon.

“This record breaking attempt is a great way to celebrate that the Town of Summerville is the birthplace of sweet tea,” said Mayor Bill Collins. “After we break the record for the world’s largest sweet tea, we get to share it with the community and make everyone a part of this historic event. We do love our sweet tea.”

An official adjudicator from the Guinness Book of World Records will be on-site to verify and present the new record. The Charleston Tea Plantation will certify it as classic sweet tea. Currently Chick-fil-A® holds the world record for largest sweet tea.

If successful, the Town of Summerville, The Charleston Tea Plantation, Dixie Crystals and Scout Boats will all be Guinness Book of World Records holders.

Admission is free to the public; commemorative mason jars can be purchased for $5. Food vendors will incorporate sweet tea into their menus, and the event will take place rain or shine. Visit summervillesc.gov/worldrecord for more information.
