Memento mori: Warnings from the American West and Antarctica, a collection of photographs by Michelle Van Parys and Stuart Klipper, will open Jan. 16, 2009 at the City Gallery at Waterfront Park. The public is invited to the free opening reception and book signing by the exhibition artists, Jan. 16 from 6 to 8 p.m. The exhibit is co-sponsored by the Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art at the College of Charleston.

On display until Feb. 22, 2009, Memento mori: Warnings from the American West and Antarctica depicts the remote landscapes of the American West and Antarctica while also representing the transitional state of landscapes in the early 21st century.

Mark Long, a political geographer and associate professor of political science at the College of Charleston, is guest curator of the exhibit.

Van Parys is a professor of studio art at the College of Charleston and her photographs have been published and exhibited internationally. Her book entitled The Way Out West: Desert Landscapes of Michelle Van Parys will be available for purchase during the opening reception. Klipper is an internationally acclaimed photographer who has been working in the medium for more than 30 years. He will also be available at the opening reception for the signing of his book, The Antarctic: From the Circle to the Pole.
