On March 3, 2015, at 6:00 p.m., Debra Lindsay will present her lecture, Maria Martin Bachman: Audubon's Assistant, in the Charleston Museum's Arthur Wilcox Auditorium. As March is Women’s History Month, we are delighted to present this upcoming lecture to unveil the details of the life and work of Maria Martin Bachman. Dr. Lindsay has conducted much of her research for her upcoming book, Maria Martin’s World: Family, Faith and Science in Antebellum Charleston, here in our Archives and Collections.
As an accomplished botanical artist whose paintings appeared in Audubon’s Birds of America, Maria Martin left more images than words for posterity. Focusing on Maria Martin’s work as Audubon’s assistant, Debra Lindsay will address two questions: “how did Maria Martin create such beautiful works of art?" and “why did she do so?" In addition to artifacts from the collections of the Charleston Museum, there will be slides of published images from Birds of America as well as sketches from private collections accompanying the presentation.
This lecture is FREE and open to the public!
