From February 3 – 6, 2011, a group of harpists from all over the country and as far away as Israel will assemble in Charleston for a Liturgical Harp Conference.
This year’s event will feature internationally known teachers and performers such as Ray Pool, Sam Milligan, Sunita Staneslow, Rhett Barnwell, Christine Van Arsdale and others. The Conference will take place at St. Johannes Lutheran Church in Ansonborough, and will conclude with a large group of harpists playing during the 11:00am worship service at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church on February 6th.
Requiem Aeternam - Celebrating Vibrations of Eternal Life

The Requiem program will explore through lecture and music the creatively eternal vibrations of God which reaches from us to the departed souls. It will include music for voice, harp and cello which celebrates life in the resurrection of Christ. “May the angels lead you into paradise; may the martyrs come to welcome you and take you to the holy city, the new and eternal Jerusalem. May the choir of angels welcome you, and where Lazarus is poor no longer may you find eternal rest.” (from the “Requiem Mass”) Join us to join heaven and earth to celebrate life.

Seven Centuries of Sacred Music from Spain and the New World

Renowned harpist and Spanish music scholar Sam Milligan will present this fascinating lecture and performance program covering diverse repertoire from Spain and the New World. The program will feature sopranos Victoria Lawson, Claire Teuber, violinists Mary Taylor and Angi Loizides, Sam Milligan playing historical Spanish harps, along with viola da gamba.
Ray Pool and Sunita Staneslow – Sacred Music for the Harp

Ray Pool is an internationally known performer and teacher who currently resides in New York City. For many years, he played at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York, and for numerous Broadway shows. He has published several collections of sacred music for the harp and will perform selections at the concert. Sunita Staneslow is also a well known performer, teacher and arranger currently living in Israel. She has performed with the Jerusalem Symphony and the Israel Philharmonic, among others, and has recorded over 20 CDs. She will be performing music from the Jewish sacred repertoire.
