The quarterly History Matters Lecture Series, hosted by Historic Charleston Foundation, will offer fascinating topics that illustrate why History Matters!
Lauren Northup will discuss Louis Manigault's (1828-1899) exciting journey around the globe as well as the decorative and fine arts that he acquired while in the exotic ports of the Far East. Manigault was the son of the Charles Izard Manigault and grandson of both Gabriel Manigault and Nathaniel Heyward. Louis left Yale after his second year to follow in his father's footsteps and pursue a business education in Asia. Louis' handwritten record of his travels, which miraculously survived the Civil War and both World Wars, forms the basis of this lecture. Northup will also discuss new findings from private and previously undocumented Manigault family manuscripts, including never-before-seen watercolors and ephemera.
All lectures take place at the Capt. James Missroon House at 5:30pm (doors open at 5pm). Lectures are free for Friends and Guild donors and a $5 donation is suggested for the general public. Become a donor today.
Seating is limited. RSVP by August 1 by calling the number provided.
