Fashion Flashback

While the current exhibition in our Textile Gallery,
Fashion Flashback,1920s - 1960s: Five Decades of Style that Changed America, features fashions from the 20th century, we decided to take an opportunity to allow some of you to go even further back in time to the 1800s. Curator of Historic Textiles, Jan Hiester will be leading select groups into the Museum's storeroom to view the fashions of, first, the 1860s and then, in another tour, the 1820s. These tours will lead attendees both into the current exhibit of trends from 1900s and into the storeroom to discuss fashions that dominated the 1800s. Participants will thus be able to compare and contrast the time periods, discuss cultural and economic impacts that may have effected popular clothing choices, converse about technique and fabric choices, and openly ask questions.

On February 24, we would like to invite you to travel back in time a hundred years before the psychedelic 1960s to an an era dominated by the Civil War - the 1860s. At 5:30 pm, join Curator of Historic Textiles Jan Hiester for an Exclusive Storeroom Tour: Fashion Flashback- Let's Go Even Further Back- 1860s.

On March 10, Join us for another flashback evening, going even further back a hundred years before the swinging 1920s. Fashion from the days of Jane Austen in the 1820s will be on view in our collections storage room, transporting participants to a period of neo-classical thought and styles. Through our women's and men's clothing and accessories, one will see how fashion rebelled against the courtly dress so fashionable before the French Revolution. The sheer sprigged muslin dresses, beautiful flat slippers and clever bags and fans will accompany those who embark on this delightful journey, Exclusive Storeroom Tour: Fashion Flashback- Let's Go Even Further Back- 1820s at 5:30 pm.
