November 23: Tribal Tunes- Gourd Instument Making
*at the Dill Sanctuary (1163 Riverland Drive, Charleston)
Join musician and master craftsman, Hawk Hurst, for an exciting, hands-on experience, as we learn to create ancient musical instruments. Participants will be guided to make and decorate their own Native American-style gourd maracas and river cane clappers. WE will end our morning with some rousing tunes played with our own handmade instruments. Hawk is an accomplished storyteller and folk musician, with nine CD’s and two children’s books to his credit. Hawk creates the flutes, drums, and rattles used during his performances.
For ages 6 and up. 9:30am-12:00pm

November 24: Tribal Life and Customs
*at the Dill Sanctuary (1163 Riverland Drive, Charleston)
Students will be immersed in the daily life of South Carolina’s first inhabitants by examining the daily activities of Native American men, women, and children. Learn their methods of survival by handling animal skins, pottery, arrowheads, and primitive tools. Students will learn Native American techniques for transforming the natural world to fulfill their daily needs. Hands-on stations include flint knapping, pottery, and folktales.
For ages 6 and up. 9:30am-12:00pm

January 30: Sweetgrass Baskets
at the Charleston Museum, 360 Meeting St
Children will learn how to start their own sweetgrass basket with help from local artisan Sarah Edwards-Hammond. Her family is descended from West African artists who brought the craft to the Lowcountry some 300 years ago. Learn the history of this local art form and create art of your own. This workshop is part of a series where children can get their hands on history. Each workshop features a local artisan and a specialized tour of Museum collections. Program is for children ages 8 and up, adults can pay child rate if they would like to participate. This event is funded in part by the South Carolina Arts Commission which receives support from the National Endowment for the Arts.
