Charleston Chamber Opera Presents “The Diva’s Come Undone”

Charleston Chamber Opera and the Gibbes Museum of Art are partnering for an afternoon of art and opera in the Gibbes Rotunda on Sunday, November 6 at 3pm. In conjunction with the Main Gallery exhibition Breaking Down Barriers: 300 Years of Women in Art, Charleston Chamber Opera will present The Diva’s Come Undone. The operatic repertoire will feature women on the verge of ecstasy, despair, or a nervous breakdown - perhaps all at the same time! Inspired by the book Opera, or the Undoing of Women by feminist philosopher and cultural critic Catherine Clement, the concert explores opera through a feminist lens and includes irresistibly seductive music from The Rape of Lucretia, Lucia di Lammermoor, and Mefistofele.

The Diva’s Come Undone program is divided into four sections: Dreams & Nightmares; Rivals & Resigned Women; Despair & Madness; and Letting Go, which offers the glorious Der Rosenkavalier trio as the finale to the program. The performance will be the Charleston Chamber Opera debut of well-known Charleston mezzo-soprano Jennifer Luiken, and will also features sopranos Mary-Therese Heintzkill and Patrice Tiedemann with piano accompaniment by Steven Morris.
“We always look forward to working with the very talented performers from Charleston Chamber Opera. They do such a masterful job of interpreting our exhibitions through operatic music. I look forward to seeing and hearing their response to Breaking Down Barriers: 300 Years of Women in Art,” said Gibbes Executive Director Angela D. Mack.

Tickets for The Diva’s Come Undone are $15 for museum members and students and $25 for non-members (museum admission is included in the ticket price). Tickets can be purchased online at www.gibbesmuseum.org/events, at the Gibbes Museum Store, or by calling 722-2706 x22. Advance ticket purchase is strongly recommended.
