The Bach family contributed generations of musicians and composers, but the most notable were father and son Johann Sebastian Bach and Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach. Charleston Symphony Orchestra musicians will take on two of their most famous concertos including Johann Sebastian Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos Nos. 2 & 3, and Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach’s Flute Concerto. Johann Heinrich Schmelzer’s Balletto for Strings and Continuo in G (“Die Fechtschule”), a lively Viennese Baroque piece, opens the concert. The pieces will feature CSO (principal) musicians as soloists including: Yuriy Bekker, violin; Jessica Hull-Dambaugh, flute; Mark Gainer, oboe; and Michael Smith, trumpet.

VIVALDI - The Four Seasons
PIAZZOLLA - The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires
This concert will feature CSO Concertmaster, Yuriy Bekker, and his teacher, Herbert Greenberg, on violins to personify the profound impact of history and experience on new generations of music. As Concertmaster was inspired by his teacher, so was Ástor Pantaleón Piazzolla's Four Seasons of Buenos Aires influenced by The Four Seasons of Antonio Vivaldi. While both pieces include a set of four compositions, the centuries that separate them contrast beautifully. Piazzolla, a 20th century Argentine composer, scored the pieces for his quintet including elements of tango and traditional South American sounds to give the impression of the four seasons in Buenos Aires. Vivaldi's best-known work, which is among the most popular pieces of Baroque music, is a set of four violin concertos composed in 1723. The concertos vary in texture, each resembling its respective season.

The Charleston Symphony Orchestra takes the audience once again on a musical time machine in the program "Time Machine: Where Are You Haydn?" This educational and interactive program explores the stages of Franz Joseph Haydn's composing life. The performance features CSO principal horn player, Brandon Nichols, who has been a member of the CSO since 1989. Last season the CSO presented another classical composer's life works to a sold-out house; now join them as they take on works from the "Father of the Symphony" himself.

Tragedy followed the composers featured on this program; however, both were prolific writers during their short lives. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart showed prodigious ability from the age of 5, but into adulthood grew a restless musician. In only 35 years, Mozart was able to leave a significant impression on Western art music and is among the most endearingly popular classical composers. Another young musical genius, Felix Mendelssohn, struggled socially as an aloof, mean-tempered individual who was extremely passionate about his compositions. Mendelssohn prevailed and held fast to his conservative musical taste, setting him apart from his more adventurous contemporaries. Both pieces featured on this concert were written early in their careers, allowing the Orchestra to reflect on the amazing talents of these young geniuses.

Often composers wrote some of their most inspiring pieces about faraway lands and exotic cultures. The pieces in "Postcards from Abroad" highlight some of the most memorable of these works eliciting countries other than the composer's motherland. Featuring CSO Concertmaster and Artistic Advisor Yuriy Bekker as conductor and Charleston's Enrique Graf, piano, the Symphony will perform Italian composer Gioachino Antonio Rossini's famous Overture to The Barber of Seville. Additional pieces include Mozart's Symphony No. 31, "Paris", Florencia Di Conciolo's Piano Concerto (a South Carolina premiere) and Darius Milhaud's Le boeuf sur le toit, a surrealist ballet whose score, written by Milhaud, was strongly influenced by Brazilian popular music.
