The Garden Club of South Carolina will celebrate its 80th Anniversary with a Plantation Tour on The Cooper River, Friday, November 12 and Saturday November 13, 2010.
“The owners of these privately owned, historic plantations are graciously sharing them with the Garden Club of South Carolina,” says Terry Ritchen, Chairman of the Event, “and we are sharing them with you. It’s going to be a very special day.”
The tour will benefit the President’s projects –including the Memorial Garden; and provide necessary funding for future GCSC projects.
Friday, November 12, 2010 – Join us for The Plantation Tour Reception from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Mount Pleasant Memorial Waterfront Park. The party will be in the Cooper River Room of the Kruger Visitors Center overlooking the Charleston Harbor and the Cooper River. We also will have access to The War Memorial and Sweet Grass Cultural Arts Pavilion located at the Visitors Center.
Saturday, November 13, 2010- A Day on the Cooper River… The plantations will open from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. A box lunch will be available for you to purchase in advance. The grounds of Historic Mepkin Abbey are included in the tour price. Mepkin Abbey will offer a private tour for those who wish to see their beautiful Chapel. (Arrival time for the Chapel Tour is 2:30 p.m. with the tour starting at 3:00 p.m. The price is $5.00 extra.)
Reservations are limited. Tickets are available as a package or sold individually. The Total package is $55.00, and includes The Plantation Tour, Box Lunch and the Reception on Friday. Tickets will be sold separately for touring the Chapel at Mepkin Abbey, the price is $5.00. Hotel accommodations can be found on the GCSC Website and in the The South Carolina Gardener.
Journey to the upper reaches of the Cooper River in Berkeley County, ride through the beautiful alee of oaks and enjoy a rare opportunity to travel back in time and see the beautiful plantations where ‘rice was king’ in South Carolina.
