Thousands of students who attend the First Day Festival come not only to celebrate education, but also to receive needed school supplies for the new school year. The School Supply Drive plays a major part of the First Day Festival. It is organized by the Mayor’s Office for Children, Youth & Families with local businesses and organizations committing to collect the basic school supplies needed for a new school year. The drive begins in May and runs through the first week of August. Throughout Charleston County, several drop-off locations are set-up to make it easier for donors. The greatest benefit of the school supply drive is to ensure that children start school with the supplies they need to participate fully in the learning process.
