The Gibbes Museum of Art Launches Women in Art Lecture Series 11/04/2009 11/11/2009 11/18/2009 Location: The Gibbes Museum of Art Phone: 843-722-2706 Web Site: http://www.gibbesmuseum.org/events The Gibbes Museum of Art will celebrate the many contributions of women in art with a three-part lecture series slated for Wednesday evenings in November. The Women in Art lecture series will explore women in a variety of roles including artist, model, collector, and philanthropist. A wine and cheese reception will follow each lecture and a book signing will occur on two of the three evenings at the museum. Women in Art is being offered in partnership with the Center for Women. November 4, 2009 at 6pm Sargent’s Women Lecture by Warren Adelson, President of Adelson Galleries, and Deborah Davis, author of Strapless: John Singer Sargent and the Fall of Madame X The evening is presented in association with CFADA and the Charleston Fine Art Annual As recognized authorities on the artist John Singer Sargent, Warren Adelson and Deborah Davis will explore the artist’s relationships with women, including family members, friends, models, and the infamous Madame X. Following the lecture, Davis will be available to sign copies of her book Strapless. November 11, 2009 at 6pm Women of the Gibbes Lecture by Angela Mack, Executive Director of the Gibbes Museum of Art This lecture will offer an insider’s look at the female artists, collectors, and philanthropists who have shaped the Gibbes Museum of Art, including an opportunity to view rarely exhibited works of art from the museum’s collection. November 18, 2009 at 6pm Daufuskie Island: Photographs by Jeanne Moutoussamy-Ashe Lecture by Jeanne Moutoussamy-Ashe, Artist Photographer Jeanne Moutoussamy-Ashe will share stories about her career and her compelling group of photographs that document life on Daufuskie Island, South Carolina. Following the lecture, Moutoussamy-Ashe will be available to sign copies of her book Daufuskie Island: Photographs by Jeanne Moutoussamy-Ashe.
