On the scenic shores of Alhambra Hall overlooking the beautiful Charleston, SC harbor, the Town of Mount Pleasant will honor the 23rd anniversary of a unique shrimping festival that attracts thousands of visitors from across the southeast each year. The 23rd Annual Town of Mount Pleasant Blessing of the Fleet & Seafood Festival is set for April 25, 2010, 11:30 AM - 5:00 PM.
This highly-anticipated event celebrates the local shrimping industry and features local shrimp boat captains partaking in an annual pre-season tradition - the blessing of the shrimp fleet. As one of Mount Pleasant’s largest tourist events, the festival attracted approximately people from across the southeast last year.
Two clergymen perform the actual blessing ceremony, offering wishes to each individual decorated shrimp boat as it passes through the harbor to ensure the captains a safe and prosperous shrimping season. Throughout the day, festival-goers will enjoy family-themed entertainment, including live beach music and lively shrimp-eating and shag dance contests. Guests will delight in trying out seafood and other cuisine offered for sale by local restaurants during the festival.
Other highlights of each year’s festival include an arts and crafts show featuring over 40 exhibitors, a display by the Mount Pleasant Artists Guild and various marine, maritime history and wildlife exhibits. In Alhambra Park, magicians, clowns and face painters will delight children with engaging tricks and games.
There is no admission fee and parking is free. This is a family event and no alcohol is sold. Animals, skateboards and bicycles are not allowed. Event-goers are encouraged to look be on the lookout for Blessing of the Fleet and Seafood Festival-related activities taking place throughout the weekend.
