The Sanctuary at Kiawah Island Golf Resort ranked #1 Family Resort in U.S. and Canada by Travel + Leisure Family

Families love Kiawah Island, according to Travel + Leisure Family readers.
For the first time, The Sanctuary at Kiawah Island Golf Resort ranked as the number one family friendly resort in the U.S. and Canada. Last year, the poll ranked it as the top family resort in the East and Southeast.
The ratings appear in the fall issue of the magazine, which publishes quarterly and has a circulation of 500,000. The Sanctuary, which only opened in 2004, ranked above other more-established resorts like Disney's Grand Californian Hotel and Spa in Anaheim, California, The Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, and The Homestead in Hot Springs, Virginia.

The Sanctuary opened in August 2004 and features 255 rooms and suites. It is located directly along Kiawah's 10 miles of sandy coastline, and features two outdoor pools, an indoor pool and a Discovery Room, where families can learn about Kiawah's natural habitat. The resort offers special children's golf and tennis programs, as well as a variety of nature-based recreational options, such as alligator walks, family kayaking in the salt marsh and ocean seining (which is the oldest form of fishing). The resort also operates a 21-acre park that houses a children's camp, a soccer field, basketball courts and a junior Olympic-sized pool.
