The Family Circle Cup Community Outreach program is all about making a difference in the community. In 2002, the tournament started a scholarship grant at the College of Charleston for female student athletes who not only excel on the playing field, but off as well. Every year $5,000 is donated to an outstanding female athlete who is a well-rounded student, and whose accomplishments include giving back to the community. The scholarship winner is selected based on a number of criteria including academic accomplishment, volunteerism/community involvement, financial need, and athletic accolades. This year’s winner is junior Megan Manthey, a member of the College of Charleston’s Women’s Soccer team.

Each scholarship applicant was asked to write an essay regarding her qualifications for this scholarship. Manthey, a junior Sociology major from Ferndale, Washington, is fully committed to each aspect of her life, including academics, athletics, and community involvement. She is passionate about sharing her intellectual and athletic abilities with middle school-aged girls to help them achieve their goals and dreams both on and off the field.

“This inspirational young woman defines what the Family Circle Cup Scholarship is all about. Megan Manthey has demonstrated academic and athletic accomplishment, as well as generous volunteerism and community involvement,” commented Robin Reynolds, Family Circle Cup Tournament Director. “This grant will help her continue to assist children through mentoring and sport instruction, as well as help further her education.”

Manthey transferred to the College of Charleston from the University of Colorado in 2007, and brought a lengthy history of academic excellence and athletic accomplishment including nominations to the Academic All Big-12 First Team in 2006, the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll in the fall of 2006 and spring of 2007, and appearances on the Dean’s List and Honor Role in 2006.

Since arriving at the College of Charleston in 2007, Manthey has maintained a distinguished 3.46 grade point average in the classroom. As an athlete on the Women’s Soccer team, Manthey was named a College of Charleston Player of the Week in 2007 stemming from impressive results in her first season after transferring from Colorado. She started all 20 games, shared the team lead with four goals and five assists for 13 points on the season, and led the team with 37 shots. Manthey owns an impressive .486 shots-on-goal percentage and was tied for 10th in the Southern Conference in assists.
“The Family Circle Cup’s support is greatly appreciated at the College of Charleston, and it’s great to see this award bestowed upon such a deserving student athlete,” commented Laura Lageman, College of Charleston’s Associate Director of Athletics. “Megan’s accomplishments in the classroom and on the field, as well as her accompanying personality and commitment to the community, are what make her such an admirable young woman and strong role model.”

“My goal is to pursue soccer professionally, not only because of my passion for the game, but also to serve as a positive female role model. I want to use that platform to continue to encourage and give hope to girls desiring to excel in areas of life that the world tells them are impossible," said Megan Manthey, Family Circle Cup Community Outreach Scholarship Grant Recipient. “I’ve very grateful for the Family Circle Cup’s generosity, and it is a great honor to represent the College of Charleston in receiving this award. I plan to use the money to buffer my expenses throughout my senior year, and to make myself more available to the charitable causes I’m involved with.”

Manthey has generously given back to society in a number of ways including volunteering her time at the Denver Children’s Hospital in the Colorado Buffalo’s “Hugs with the Buffs” program where she delivered stuffed animals to patients. She has also participated in the “Read with the Buffs” program – visiting local elementary schools to read to students. In Charleston, Manthey has worked with the Habitat for Humanity Blitz Build, as well as actively mentoring 6th and 7th grade girls on a weekly basis and assisting in the operation of middle school church services at Seacoast Church in Mt. Pleasant.

In addition to the $5,000 grant, Manthey will receive a ticket package to enjoy a night session of world class tennis at the 2008 Family Circle Cup where she will have an opportunity to meet the winner of the singles match at the end of the evening.
