Tristan Restaurant Set to Open May 2005
For Immediate Release, May 2005

A fine dining restaurant with an established name will open May 23 with a new chef, a new menu, an updated space and a focus on sophisticated culinary adventure.

Tristan, at 55 Market Street, is a hive of activity these days as a new team assembled by owners Jerry and Anita Zucker prepares for opening night. The space includes a 144-seat dining room, a bar that seats 40, a patio for 16 and an upstairs banquet area that can seat 60. The restaurant will also provide room service to the French Quarter Inn, in which it is located.

Tristan exudes elegance and glamour. Against a palette of white walls and linens, the room’s classic navy banquettes make for a crisp, timeless environment. Colorful glass artwork throughout the room, and contemporary paintings from numerous fresh talents, introduce color and movement befitting the supple lines of the restaurant’s architecture.

Chef Ciaran Duffy has created a menu perfectly suited to the place. Combining classic techniques with an exciting list of ingredients informed by world cuisines, Duffy is primed to assume his own place in the Lowcountry food scene. Consider his Halibut served with marinated heirloom tomatoes, sautéed sea beans and brussel sprout leaves with a kiwi and strawberry gastrique, or his lightly smoked Lamb Ribs flavored with hickory and a spicy chocolate BBQ sauce.

Flavors and ingredients like roasted poblano puree, buttered baby bok choy , kataifi pastry, Grana Padana Cheese, Telecherry pepper, toasted curry vinaigrette, ostrich and veal signal one clear message: Tristan is a bold new presence.

The restaurant will also feature nightly specials – the self-effacingly named “Blue Plate Specials” are limited offers of unique cuts of beef and special dishes that provide local epicures a rare treat of Dover Sole with fresh truffles (Wednesdays) or Fried Spiny Lobster tail with Jalapeno Parmesan crust (Friday).

Duffy is a graduate of The Art Institute, and built a reputation in Atlanta where he was chef at Rainwater. The restaurant was highly regarded and was lauded by the James Beard Foundation, among others. Duffy was most recently Executive Chef of the Harbour Club in Charleston.

David Bucks returns to his fine dining roots as general manager of Tristan. Bucks has coordinated the build up to opening; he launched his career more than 15 years ago with a number of appointments at upscale restaurants in Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

Reservations may be made at 534-2155. Tristan will open nightly for dinner from 5:30 p.m. to 10 (dinner will be served until 11 on Friday and Saturday). Bar hours are 11:30 a.m. until 12 a.m. (or until last call). p.m. Dinner: 5:30 to 10 Sunday – Thursday, 5:30 to 11 Friday and Saturday. By summer, Tristan will introduce an elegant lunch menu, and will begin to serve brunch later in the season.
