Making her third appearance at the Tier I Charleston event, Venus Williams,
2004 Family Circle Cup Champion and winner of 34 Sony Ericsson WTA Tour singles titles including five Grand Slam championships, has officially entered the 2007 Family Circle Cup. As a former World No. 1 player, Venus is one of only 15 women since computer rankings started in 1973 to hold that top honor. Venus will join five other players in Charleston this year that have held that elite spot in women’s professional tennis (Maria Sharapova, Justine Henin, Amélie Mauresmo, Martina Hingis, and Serena Williams). The Family Circle Cup, scheduled for April 7th - 15th, 2007 at the Family Circle Tennis Center on Daniel Island, now boasts one of the most impressive player fields on the women’s professional tennis tour this year, and includes 4 of the Top 5 players in the world as well as 15 of the Top 20.

“As a former Family Circle Cup champion and five-time Grand Slam winner, Venus has the true mark of a champion,” noted Robin Reynolds, Family Circle Cup Tournament Director. “She joins an unprecedented Family Circle Cup player field that now includes five former World No.1 players and the current top player in the world. Combined, these six women have won 26 Grand Slam singles titles.”

Consistently a top player on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour throughout the past decade, Venus Williams has been a driving force behind the transformation of women’s tennis into the action-packed high-energy power game that it is today. Firmly back on top of her game, Venus made her 2007 debut breezing through the player field at Memphis and earning her 34th Sony Ericsson WTA Tour title on February 25th as she conquered top-seeded Shahar Peer in straight sets 6-1, 6-1. Having spent over seven years as a Top 10 player and possessing more than 400 match victories leading to over $16 million in career earnings, Venus is always a top contender in each event she enters. She has amassed an astounding 145 – 31 record in Grand Slam competition, owns a 6-1 record in Charleston, and boasts career match victories over each Top 10 player in the 2007 Family Circle Cup player field.

“The Family Circle Cup is a great event and the city of Charleston is wonderful place to visit.” commented Venus Williams. “With such a good player field, this tournament will be great preparation for the clay court season leading up to the French Open.”

The 2007 Family Circle Cup will be held April 7th – 15th at the Family Circle Tennis Center in Charleston, South Carolina.
