Our Naval Aviation VIP Tours provide highly individualized tours of the USS Yorktown and its aircraft customized to your hotel’s guest’s interests and time parameters. Guests will receive a personalized, escorted tour including behind the scene artifacts, ship’s spaces normally off limits and stories from all campaigns of this famous aircraft carrier. Guide is Commander Butch Hills, a graduate of Navy Fighter Weapons School (Top Gun) and the Naval War College with over 3000 hours in naval aircraft (mainly the E-2C Hawkeye) and 415 carrier landings. Air War in Vietnam:
An in-depth look at the air war in North and South Vietnam, complete with a detailed look at aircraft onboard the USS Yorktown that participated in the campaign against Hanoi, includes an in-depth look at the following aircraft: A-4 Skyhawk, A-6 Intruder, F-8 Crusader, F-4 Phantom and A-7 Corsair II.
World War II Naval Aviation in the Pacific, 1941-1942:
Led by our first ace of World War II and Medal of Honor recipient Navy pilot Butch O’Hare (interpreted by our resident pilot), this program discusses the beginning of the war in the Pacific and the critical development of United States Navy’s carrier warfare tactics. The program includes an in-depth look at the following aircraft: F-4F Wildcat, TBD Devastator and the SBD Dauntless.
Naval Fighter Development and Tactics (1941-1990)
A detailed look at the development of naval fighters and the tactics they used from the era of piston engine aircraft in World War II to the jet age and from guns to missiles. Aircraft covered are the F-4F Wildcat, F-6F Hellcat, F4U Corsair, F9F Cougar, F-8 Crusader, F-4J Phantom, F-14 Tomcat and F-18 Hornet.
Air Operations onboard U. S. Navy Aircraft Carriers (1941-Present Day)
How do pilots take off and land aboard aircraft carriers at sea? This program covers the intricacies and dangers of the heaving carrier flight deck and launch/recovery operations onboard our carriers with a look at development from World War II to present day aircraft carriers. Discussion of catapult and arresting gear machinery, angled deck and fresnel lens are included in this program.
