On Thursday, February 22, 2007, local business leaders officially welcomed AirTran Airways as the newest carrier to the Charleston area. The Charleston Area Convention & Visitors Bureau, along with the Charleston County Aviation Authority and Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce worked for several months to lure the low-cost airline to Charleston International Airport.

According to David Jennings, Chairman of the Charleston County Aviation Authority, “Having daily flights to Atlanta will provide Charleston area residents an affordable means to reach their destination whether they are traveling for business or pleasure.” Rick Mosteller, Chairman of the Charleston Area CVB, remarked “AirTran also has a corporate traveler program called A2B that has fewer rules and restrictions than larger airlines. Charleston area business travelers will certainly benefit from no required Saturday night stay; priority boarding; free business class upgrades and no change fees.” According to Helen Hill, Executive Director of the Charleston Area CVB, “AirTran’s hub provides more than 700 flights a day to and from 50 destinations – this will mean greater access to the Charleston area for more visitors.”

AirTran’s service will begin on May 24, and travelers can begin booking on February 22. AirTran offers connecting service to cities including Washington, DC, Boston and New York, as well as west coast destinations including San Francisco, Las Vegas and Los Angeles. Travelers can get more information at www.airtran.com or by visiting www.chs-airport.com.
